The Benefits of Private Tutoring

Updated: Oct 28

After speaking with a parent recently, I became aware of one of the less obvious-yet-beneficial aspects of the specialized tutoring that I do. Aside from the structured, multi-sensory approach that makes this type of instruction so amazingly successful for the dyslexic student, it is the way in that it is provided.

It is having private, one-on-one instruction.

In the school environment, students are tested. Upon results indicating a need for remediation, they will be removed from the general classroom and grouped with a few other students also needing more focused help with a teacher trained (or sometimes not) in a specialized reading program the school district has approved of.

The smaller group size is indeed a better environment for these struggling readers. However, what my students benefit from most is the one-on-one teaching that is provided through my tutoring here at SkyWord Tutoring. There is no competition with any other students; they have my undivided attention. My awareness is that we all need to feel "seen" when we are interacting with others...and especially with someone that you are learning from. Mistakes...well this is the arena to have them in. And, mistakes are absolutely okay! My students are indeed seen by me.

There is a trusting environment created...even if 300 miles away! My "squirrely" students actually do better online (or in-person) when there is no other child to perform for or regarding being embarrassed about a lack of knowledge or lack of ability. It's just the two of us. So much learning can happen when the focus and attention are at its best. It is rare for a student to get this luxury in a public school system.

I would love to chat and/or assist in any way I can!
