Dylslexia has been one of the most misunderstood conditions in our school systems. Schools have been unable to provide the type of teaching that a dyslexic brain needs to succeed in grasping how we read and spell.
What a dylsexic learner needs at the end of the day is strong phonics instruction provided in a structured yet multi-sensory way. What is meant by multi-sensory is to engage all of the different senses or the ways that the brain learns and processes information. This means auditory (hearing), visual (seeing), tactile (touch) and kinesthetic (movement).
The program I utilize, the Barton Reading and Spelling System, is an Orton Gillingham-based program that teaches reading in a structured manner, using the components of phonology, sound-symbol associations, syllables, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Students recieve an understanding of why and how words are created, which solidifies the knowledge for them and they can undestand our language fully.
