Barton Reading and Spelling System

What IS the Barton Reading and Spelling System you ask?

It is a program using an Orton Gillingham-based curriculum. Barton is multi-sensory, interactive and progresses in a sequential way if taught with fidelity.

Beginning with Book One, colored blank tiles are used to represent the break down of the most basic words into segments, or phonemes. Because dyslexic brains are not wired to recognize the segmentation of sounds/letters in a given word, students are taught to associate sounds with tiles that they can manipulate and build words using this new skill.

This is where it begins.

There are a total of ten books that students move through, all in sequence and not missing any of the important steps. Each book contains a multitude of lessons that repeat a set of routine steps that stay consistent in structure but cover changing materials as we move along through the program. Barton is a complete Language Arts program that can work in conjunction with an IEP plan for greater success for your child. Learning in the way that enables them to understand the concepts being taught utilizing the accommodations they need. The sooner they start in their educational timeline, the better!

Dyslexic students do not easily memorize numbers or words, therefore Barton teaches using stories, explanations and rules that give the WHY behind all protocols of the English language. It has been proven that information given in this way is understood and remembered by dyslexic students, as they have a wonderful ability to reference learned information that makes sense and has meaning.

This program requires commitment to regular sessions, at least twice per week. It does not follow a standard grade level curriculum, but instead progresses sequentially, beginning with the basics and expanding lesson-by-lesson, book-by-book. Not all students are created equal, and the lessons are taught at the speed the student needs to absorb the information completely. Aside from the base information given, approved educational games are utilized to make this process enjoyable and even fun! Sometimes it is hard work; so at the end of each session, I reserve the last 10 minutes to relax the brain with a non-related easy to play game.

Remote sessions employ the use of an online Barton program that with the right equipment allows the student and tutor to share a screen and work interactively, allowing students to move tiles, write and annotate right from home!
