  • Are online tutoring sessions as successful as in-person sessions?
Short answer...yes! Each child is unique however and there are indeed some children that just do better in person. However, I have successfully worked with many students, and the online experience is highly successful for most.....even the squirrely kids! The sessions I provide are engaging. I utilize an online platform that allows my remote students to participate live with me, moving components as well as completing necessary exercises with ease. I incorporate a lot of educational games to test drive what we have learned, too. As an option, I offer a hybrid system that begins with in-person instruction and then evolves into remote session as time goes on. Children can spend in-person time with me in the beginning during the foundational work of the the first few books. Establishing a rapport with one another can provide a good foundation to continue from afar. They know and understand what to expect from me, and this translates into a great remote connection later. Despite the general belief that in-person is better, many of my families ultimately prefer online, as it is efficient, removing the time, inconvenience and frustration of commuting. Parents can provide a great and comfortable environment condusive to learning right from home. The results of online tutoring are honestly very convenient for all, successful and inspiring.
  • What methodology do you use?
I use the proven Barton Reading and Spelling System, which is Orton Gillingham-based and has been successful in teaching reading and spelling for over 30 years. The Orton Gillingham methodology promotes multi-sensory learning, using tactile, auditory and visual senses for an effective and interesting experience. In the field, Orton Gillingham is referred to as "OG". I associate reading and spelling rules with stories and logic, which are avenues that children with dyslexia really appreciate and enjoy, making it so much easier for them to learn and retain what they have learned for a lifetime of benefit.
  • What is Orton Gillingham?
Orton Gillingham is a method of teaching children to read. The Orton Gillingham method provides instruction in a structured manner, using multi-sensory methods and intellect that allow children with dyslexia to absorb and make sense of how our language system works (which is precisely how their brains work!). It is evidence-based, having been proven to be highly successful.
  • Tutoring Services...how does it work and what is the cost?
My tutoring program is based on an annual calendar to provide the most value. Your child will receive one-on-one, 50-minute instruction with me twice-per-week. They receive my undivided attention while we are together. I include vacations and holidays breaks in this annual calendar, as well as personal days for both myself and my families for absences. Each child is unique, and I move through the program at a rate that allows them to master each lesson completely. It is Orton-Gillingham based and has been proven to assist students with dyslexia the ability to grasp literacy and be successful. Along with progress checks along the way, children are given a post test review at the end of each of the ten books. On average it can take approximately twenty-four months to make our way through books seven or eight of the Barton System. It is common for progress and increased confidence in reading and spelling to occur in a matter of just a few months. Both options include personalized preparation time each week for your child as well as regular progress communication with you as we move through this amazing program! The monthly rate for online sessions is currently at $590. I bill my families prior to the beginning of the month for a due date of the first of each month. Invoicing and payments are processed seamlessly through my TutorBird Platform. For in-person sessions, please contact me to talk about the options and to discuss the monthly rate.
